B. Read the structure of  a procedure



Procedure is to describe how something is achieved or how something works through a sequence of actions or steps. This text uses simple present tense, imperatives sentences, action verbs, and adverbs/words of sequence (temporal conjunctions like first, second, next, finally, etc.).

The main structure of procedure consists of goal and steps, but in some cases, procedures mention the materials.

Some common forms of procedural texts are.

·            Directions - How do I get somewhere?

·            Instructions - How do I do something?

·            Recipes - How do I cook something?

·            Rules for games - How do I play this?

·            Manuals - How do I operate this?

·            Agendas - What are we doing? When are we doing it? Who is responsible?

Exercise

Answer the questions:

1.      Do you remember the parts of Infrared thermometer?

2.      Write shortly how to use such thermometer.

3.      Rewrite the structure of a procedure.

4.      Now, arrange into two simple procedures.

  • ü  Make sure the batteries are in the correct position.
  • ü  Load two pieces of AAA batteries
  • ü  Remove your glasses and facial covering
  • ü  Approach from 2m away parallel to the unit
  • ü  Press the MEMO button.
